Arboretum Classes

Educational Program for 2010


Classes are on Saturdays from 12-1pm and free unless otherwise noted


April 24 - Pruning Japanese Maples with Crane Stavig Spring is the time to shape your Japanese Maples to direct growth to achieve the shape you want and to eliminate crossing branches, traffic hazards and eyesores before they grow.


May 8- Mother’s Day Baskets with Dee Drake  $30 per person cash or check.  Take home a beautiful basket that will bring back fond memories for mom all summer and fall.


May 22- Growing Great Roses with Sandy Schumacher Board member Sandy Schumacher has grown roses in the northwest for many years and will be discussing the best rose selections and gardening practices for the northwest.


June 19 - Insects: the good the bad and the beautiful  with Martha Clatterbaugh Bugs, spiders and other critters are important components to a healthy garden and Martha promises you will be crawling with enthusiasm.


July 24- Conifers with Emile VandenAkker  Past President of the Arboretum, Emile VanDenAkker discusses the various types and uses of conifers in the garden.


August 21-  Attracting Birds in the Landscape with Bob Barca A slide show and lecture covering all aspects of attracting birds and the gardening practices to support them – feeders, water sources and garden design. Limit 20  Call 425-257-8597 to reserve your space


September 25 - Fall Gardening with Master Gardener Susan Jackson A good fall plan will provide rewards in the spring, so listen to Susan Jackson’s advise on the importance  of fall planting tasks and plant material to our gardening successes.


October 23 - Putting Your Garden to Bed by Wink Cushman Just like their human counterparts, plants need proper rest, shelter from the cold and wind and in some cases nutrition.  Board member Wink Cushman tells you how to get your garden ready for rain as well as swings in temperature.


November 13- Winter Containers with Dee Drake Learn container design using hardy plants that will provide color and texture throughout the long winter.


December  4Plants, Shrubs & Trees for Winter Interest with Steve Smith Sunnyside Nursery owner Steve Smith discusses the shrubs and plants that provide winter interest and color in your garden. LIMIT 20  Call 425-257-8597 to reserve your space




Docent Tours of Arboretum
